Easy DIY Non-toxic Deodorant That Works

Homemade deodorant? For real? YES!  When I began to learn about all the scary, toxic things in store deodorants (see below) I could not continue using them. HOWEVER, all the “natural” deodorants I tried FAILED!  So what was I to do? Slather my armpits, which are right by my lymph nodes (our bodies detox system) with toxins or stink?

Also I had 3 teenage daughters at the time I was trying to figure this out and they definitely refused to stink!  lol.

Gratefully I found this recipe. I have used it for years, it’s easy. Inexpensive and it WORKS!

But first, in case you don’t know:  Why are commercial deodorants a problem?

  • Aluminum – This is the primary ingredient in most deodorants you buy at the store. It’s a metal which has been linked to breast cancer in women and increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Parabens – This synthetic preservative is found in so many personal care products. The largest concern is that these chemicals will disrupt  hormonal balance. Paraben exposure has also been linked to birth defects and organ toxicity.
  • Propylene glycol – This is a petroleum based material. In large quantities, studies have shown that this stuff can cause damage to the central nervous system, liver, and heart.
  • Phthalates – Another class of chemicals that have been linked to a variety of health issues including birth defects.
  • Triclsoan – This chemical is actually classified as a pesticide by the FDA and a probable carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency.

See why I didn’t want to use these?!  But I also did not want to stink.

So here’s the solution that works:

Natural deodorant Recipe

Coconut oil’s natural antibacterial properties help to keep body odor at bay. It is an excellent deodorant on its own, or when combined into a paste with baking soda and essential oils.

This homemade deodorant recipe for sensitive skin is simple and all the ingredients are recognizable and safe.

Ingredients and supplies

1/3 cup coconut oil

3 Tbs. beeswax, grated or pellets

2 Tbs. shea butter

1/3 cup arrowroot powder

2 Tbs. baking soda (reduce to 1 Tbs if still to harsh for your skin)

7 drops of tea tree oil

7 drops of lavender or tangerine oil

2 deodorant containers

Instructions

Melt coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir continuously until melted.

Once completely melted remove off heat and whisk in arrowroot powder and baking soda. Then add essential oils. Mix thoroughly, but quickly as mixture will start to thicken.

Pour into two empty deodorant containers and let your homemade deodorant sit until completely set (give it a couple hours for good measure). Place lid on and use as you would any other deodorant.

You can use other essential oils to make the deodorant more masculine or feminine. I.e cedarwood, rose, citrus, whatever scent you love
